**Fungi Friday Alert!**
The feature for this week’s edition of Fungi Friday is Basidiospores.
They’re commonly found in outdoor samples, and their presence in an indoor sample usually indicates a wood-rotting fungi growing indoors (like in damp basements, crawl spaces, or behind walls).
Similar to Ascospores featured in our last Fungi Friday edition, Basidiospores are unique because they are also commonly separated into their own category on Mold Reports from the lab and they are not a specific genus of fungi.
Basidiospores are spores produced by Basidiomycota, a major division of fungi that includes mushrooms, puffballs, bracket fungi, and rusts. They get their name because they typically form on specialized club-shaped cells called basidia, which are found on the gills, pores, or surfaces of basidiomycete fruiting bodies.
They’re often considered aeroallergens, like pollen or other mold spores and can cause allergic reactions or hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
If you suspect mold in your home, give us a call at 813-924-4721 to schedule your Mold Assessment.
