**Fungi Friday Alert!**
The feature for this week’s edition of Fungi Friday is Ascospores.
Ascospores are unique because while they are commonly separated into their own category on Mold Reports from the lab, they are not actually a specific genus of fungi. Ascospores come from sac fungi (Ascomycota), form in asci aka sacs, and are often associated with indoor mold issues and water damage.
Common examples of Ascospores are Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast), Penicillium (mold) and Aspergillus (mold). While Ascospores are decomposers of plant material, they are also pathogens of plants and animals, making their concentrations crucial in mold testing because they indicate fungal activity, potential health risks, and environmental conditions. High levels of ascospores, especially from species like Chaetomium and Stachybotrys, suggest water damage, leaks, or high humidity.
Their resilience, allergenic potential, and association with water damage make them a key focus in air quality assessments and mold inspections.
