FUNGI FRIDAY ALERT!
If your air quality or mold test report mentions “Myxomycetes/Smut”, here’s what that typically means:
Myxomycetes:
Also known as slime molds; However, they’re not true fungi but are often grouped with fungal spores in air testing. They are typically found in decaying plant material, soil, mulch, or damp outdoor environments.
Smut Spores:
A group of fungal spores associated mostly with plants and agriculture, especially grains and grasses.
Why Are They in Your Air Report?
Their presence usually indicates airborne particles from outdoor sources that have entered the home via open doors/windows, ventilation, or on shoes and clothing. They’re not typically associated with indoor mold contamination or moisture issues. Labs often report them together because under a microscope they look similar, especially in spore trap samples like Air-O-Cell.
Should You Be Concerned?
Low to moderate levels are common and not typically a health concern. High levels indoors, especially if higher than outdoor reference samples, might suggest poor filtration, high air exchange with outdoors, or a contaminated HVAC system.
What to Do:
Make sure your HVAC system is clean and has high-efficiency filters (like MERV 11+). Reduce air leakage from outdoors. Monitor for signs of actual indoor mold (musty odors, visible growth, moisture issues).
