**Fungi Friday Alert!**
Following up with another frequent flyer on our mold reports… Penicillium!
This common genus of mold is found both indoors and outdoors — and it’s one of the most common names to pop up on professional mold inspection reports.
Here’s what you should know:
1️⃣ Appearance & Growth
Blue-green, gray-green, or white fuzzy surface.
Thrives in water-damaged or high-humidity areas.
Common on carpets, wallpaper, insulation, food, fabrics, drywall, and wood.
2️⃣ How It Spreads
Produces lightweight spores that float easily through the air.
Can colonize in just 24–48 hours after water damage.
Spreads rapidly in HVAC systems if moisture is present.
3️⃣ Health Concerns
Can trigger allergic reactions like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and asthma flare-ups.
Some species produce mycotoxins, which may cause more serious health issues with long-term exposure.
Higher risk for those with weakened immune systems or respiratory conditions.
4️⃣ Fun Fact
Penicillium chrysogenum led to the discovery of penicillin, the world’s first widely used antibiotic.
But inside your home, Penicillium mold is never a good sign — and needs to be addressed promptly.
