**Fungi Friday Alert!**
The feature for this week’s edition of Fungi Friday is Curvularia.
Curvularia is a genus of fungi that includes several species of opportunistic molds commonly found in soil, plants, and decaying organic matter. Some key points about Curvularia mold include:
Characteristics:
1. Appears as a fast-growing, dark-colored mold (gray, brown, or black) on various surfaces.
2. Produces curved, multicellular spores (conidia), which give the genus its name.
3. Common in warm, humid environments.
Where It’s Found:
1. Soil, grass, and decaying plant matter.
2. Indoor environments like damp buildings, HVAC systems, and water-damaged structures.
3. Agricultural settings, where it can infect crops like rice, maize, and wheat.
Health Risks:
1. Allergies: Can trigger asthma and allergic reactions, especially in sensitive individuals.
2. Fungal Infections: Rarely, Curvularia can cause opportunistic infections such as: Keratitis (eye infection),
Sinusitis (fungal sinus infection), Phaeohyphomycosis (skin or systemic infections)
Mycotoxin Production: Some species may produce mycotoxins.
