In addition to testing for what type of mold species is present, the ISO 17025 Certified lab we send all of our samples to tests for hyphal fragments, which are small pieces of fungal hyphae, which are the thread-like structures that make up the body of a fungus. These fragments can break off from the main hyphal network and play a role in fungal reproduction, dispersal, and survival.
If a high concentration of hyphal fragments is present in your air, it typically indicates significant fungal growth nearby. Here’s what it could mean:
Active Mold Growth – Hyphal fragments suggest the presence of an active mold colony, often growing on damp materials such as walls, ceilings, carpets, or HVAC systems.
Recent Disturbance of Mold – If moldy surfaces or materials have been disturbed (e.g., cleaning, construction, or demolition), hyphal fragments can become airborne.
High Humidity & Moisture Issues – Excess moisture from leaks, condensation, or high humidity (>60%) can promote fungal growth, leading to more airborne fragments.
Poor Ventilation – Inadequate airflow can allow fungal particles to accumulate indoors instead of dispersing naturally.
Allergic Reactions – Hyphal fragments can trigger allergies, asthma, and respiratory irritation, just like mold spores.
