Why Testing for Mold in Your Home is Crucial….
Identifying the type of mold present in your home through testing is essential for one primary reason: mycotoxins. While some molds may cause only mild irritation or allergic reactions, others can produce harmful byproducts that pose significant health risks. Air sampling (shown below) is generally considered the best method for testing, however surface samples can still be used to distinguish what type of mold species is present.
Certain mold species naturally generate mycotoxins as they grow. These toxic compounds can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled, impacting humans and animals differently depending on the type of mycotoxin involved. In some cases, their effects have been likened to those of pesticide or heavy metal exposure.
Research into mycotoxins and their health impacts began gaining traction in the 1960s. Among the most dangerous is Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. This mycotoxin has been linked to liver cancer in both humans and animals.
Given the potential risks, determining the type of mold in your home is not just important—it’s critical to ensuring a safe and healthy environment.
