One tool utilized by our licensed Mold Assessors during a mold inspection is a Hygrometer to measure relative humidity (shown below).
The relative humidity in your home plays a significant role in determining the potential for mold growth. It is generally recommended to maintain indoor humidity levels between 40% and 60%. However, some mold species can begin to grow at levels as low as 50% relative humidity.
During a Mold Assessment, humidity measurements are taken both outdoors and in multiple indoor rooms for comparison. Ideally, indoor humidity should be lower than outdoor levels. If indoor humidity is higher, it may indicate an active moisture source contributing to the elevated humidity inside the home.
