Fungi Friday Alert!
This week we are re-featuring Stachybotrys aka “Black Mold”.
Characteristics:
- Appearance: Stachybotrys typically appears dark green to black and has a slimy texture when wet (gross!). and can appear powdery when dry.
- Habitat: It thrives in environments with high cellulose content (e.g., drywall, cardboard, wood) and constant moisture. Common sites include water-damaged areas, such as basements, bathrooms, or attics.
- Growth Requirements: High humidity or consistent water leaks create the perfect conditions for Stachybotrys to grow. Health Effects: Exposure to Stachybotrys mold, especially its spores and mycotoxins, can lead to health issues, particularly in sensitive individuals. Symptoms may include:
- Respiratory problems (coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath).
- Eye, nose, or throat irritation.
- Allergic reactions (sneezing, rashes, or itchy eyes).
- In severe cases, prolonged exposure may cause neurological symptoms or exacerbate pre-existing
conditions like asthma.
However, not all Stachybotrys strains produce mycotoxins, and its health risks depend on factors like the extent of exposure and individual susceptibility.
