The dreaded BLACK MOLD… When most people think of mold in the home, they often worry about black mold aka Stachybotrys. Why is this fungi so dangerous???
Stachybotrys is capable of producing mycotoxins, which are toxic secondary substances produced by fungi. Specifically, it can produce the harmful mycotoxins macrocyclic trichothecenes, atranones, and immunosuppressive phenylspirodrimanes. Prolonged exposure to high amounts of these invisible mycotoxins has been linked to hypersensitivity pneumonitis (lung inflammation), eye & skin irritation, sinus problems, and other chronic illnesses.
If you have immunocompromised individuals in the home and suspect black mold present, it is very important to have proper testing performed!
